Street Youth
There are a lot of kids who live on the streets. You have to move quickly and with your eyes guarded to miss them, but most of us do. In this culture crowded with fear, we avoid noticing anyone who embodies our failures or fears. And street youth live in just that place. This project was produced in collaboration with the homeless youth who are featured here and/or in the portfolio and who's voices narrate this project. I spent many years photographing and interviewing homeless young people about what "Home" means to them among other questions. I met some of these kids through my work at Childrens Hospital LA, and others by spending time on the streets of Hollywood, Santa Monica and Los Angeles. Photographs published by Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.
"Home to me is basically my gathering of friends, wherever they are, wherever we are together, that would be home...friends are family, you know people that you can have to look out for each other, hang out together and stuff like that...home could be anywhere. Home is here." Bobwire 15 years old.
English Translation for Johnny: "The most important thing for me are my dreams, who I would like to be someday." Johnny 16 years old.
